The best free boot camp in the business, you actually get paid!

Genspark is a great opportunity to get your feet wet in the tech industry. Not only do you get an opportunity to learn relevant skills for employers that are looking to hire in the short term. There is a modest stipend while you are training, usually minimum wage for your local (usually 3 - 12 weeks). During your training, your skills are assessed, and when you are ready you will be submitted for interviews with real companies. Fortune 500 companies largely!!!The topics within the curriculum are challenging, so be prepared to fail until you succeed. It takes significant work and study. Once selected by a company you will begin your journey, the rest is up to you.If you do the work and apply yourself you will be successful.

Pro

Relevant industry training with a streamlined pipeline to employment with great companies.

Contra

Like any job, the onboarding and daily logistics can be confusing. Just be patient, GenSpark is only successful if you are.

What you think it is

You learn a bunch of stuff with little to no supervision and most just drop out of the program. Honestly just a place to get a free paycheck while you apply to other places

Helpful and Supportive in starting my Tech Journey

Thanks to GenSpark, I was able to start my career in the technology field. Starting as a QA Engineer. Not sure if that field is still provided after I completed the training.A lot of times there will be quiet moments while your learning. Got to say it is much better to learn with peers or anyone in the cohort. Asking for help or unsure questions I was able to get answers from. Even from the instructor I was able to understand or get what I needed.Below is how the process work.First starting off you will be in contract with training. This is the enjoyable part of the job. You start to network and learn with other peers. After you completed your training, your in bench. That is where you still sharpen your skills after training. While GenSpark's client are reaching out to interview you. I would say you got to be very patience in this process as this is the hardest part of the job.If they do want you. You will be in that one year of experiences working with the client. This one year is where the client will decide on hiring you full-time. Still if worst case scenario you have 1 year experience working in the field. That you can work and apply to different positions.

Pro

Supportive, Helpful, Career Focus, Opportunities

Contra

Contract

All Talk and No Action

They told me and my cohort that we were getting trained for a job that we would be interviewing for as soon as training was finished, but the client backed out and myself and my cohort were all let go without notice. They suggested a new cohort and we discussed a new direction, but that company backed out as well and there was just no future with GenSpark. The instructors were very hard to understand and made it frustrating to learn. If it weren't got W3Schools, FCC, SO, and other online resources I never would have learned coding.

Good for entry level experience

Get to learn new skills that may be beneficial longterm. The training program isn't bad. Pretty cool instructors but once you get placed with a client, you can't back out. Be sure it's something you really want to do.

Bad training

You need to do the studying yourself. You must have experience in coding to be successful. A lot of assignments and projects which is good for your portfolio.

Wasted Time

We were told that training would start on a specific week and that we would meet with the client the week before. The meeting with the client never occurred, which resulted in the training being pushed back. This push-back occurred 3-4 times, with our cohort being cancelled all together. Luckily, I was able to leave without any penalties, but I wish I didn't waste my time thinking I had a proper job.

Thank you for the feedback, and we're sorry about the cancellation. We do everything we can to make sure cohorts happen on schedule, but when we hold specific cohorts for clients instead of general cohorts, we are subject to what the client decides. We know this is frustrating for students eager to learn and get placed with a job, and we're brainstorming ways to avoid pushbacks and cancellations.

Fun workplace and very productive

I would say my experience working here has been amazing. From the training, down to the help received in preparing to interview with clients. Even after working for clients the staff will go out of their way to make sure that you are comfortable and progressing consistently. The management team are awesome and they will make sure that you are up to date on any changes if there were to be any that happens. The most enjoyable part of this job for me has been the people I work with, the help I receive on the daily, and the information that I have learned from all of the training. Overall a 10/10 I would recommend this job to anyone!

Training, Professionalism

Great time, just didn't work out

Great people and culture. Did a 3 month training course to start, followed by a month on bench (where you wait to get contracted out to another company). However the job that I got contracted to me didn't work out as they had expected a lot of work when the company hired a whole cohort of us off of bench, but the work never came, and we were later released by both the company and Genspark. Don't blame Genspark at all, as they were very attentive and helpful during it, even trying to get us work and fix the problem with the company we were contracted out to, even though it didn't work out in the end. If I was put a different place while on bench, it could've ended a lot better.

Pro

Nice people, good training, helpful

Contra

could get contracted out to a bad company

Confusion in abundance

OnboardingYou're originally hired under the notion that you have a job waiting after you get out of training- this isnt the case. My class of 30 was reduced to less than 15 after the first few days because we had an 'interview' with a client. You'll be told that this interview isn't a big deal- it is. Why would there be an interview if we were told that we automatically had a job out of training?TrainingThe training was disorganized and I can see it being potentially inconsistent in quality. There are no prepared materials at all and it's up to the discretion of the instructor as to what direction the training is going to go. This includes the topics and types of applications that you will cover. Since you have no prepared materials, it makes it nearly impossible to do any studying after training hours to advance your knowledge. The only option you are offered is recordings of the training; which are 8 hours long.Onboarding for clientThe onboarding process for clients is both clumsy and confusing. You will have to sign some sort of I-9 or onboarding paperwork 3 different times: onboarding, bench/waiting to onboard with client period, and onboarding with client. Signing the paperwork doesn't mean that they will receive it. Various candidates (including myself) faced issues with getting the onboarding paperwork completed. The period between the end of training and onboarding with the client took 3+ months so be prepared to get paid close to minimum wage for an extended period of time. General ExperienceIf you have any issues you may get looped around waiting for an answer. -

Hello, thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We hear you and want to do everything in our power to ensure our GenSparkers have a good experience. There are a few points we'd like to clarify:Re: OnboardingOftentimes our cohorts are designed to fit specific client needs, and occasionally clients request to pre-screen candidates themselves to make sure they'd be a good fit within the company. This helps make sure we don't waste learners' time if there isn't a fit and helps ensure there is a job for graduates at the end of training. Re: TrainingMost of cohorts do have set materials that are used and shared with the learners, but since we customize training according to the job, some portions of the curriculum will vary across cohorts intentionally to meet client demands and make sure that candidates are perfectly trained for the job. Re: Onboarding for clientWe apologize for the confusion, and we are planning on working with our Resource Management team to streamline our communication. Because we pay you different amounts during training, bench, and client placement, there are 3 different sets of paperwork but our team will work to make this as easy as possible on learners. Re: General ExperienceWe're sorry for the difficulties you faced, and thank you for bringing them to our attention. We have since improved our communication process by establishing a single Point of Contact and increasing check-ins with candidates. Re: Hardest Part of JobTime on bench can be tough, but we are glad that we can pay you minimum wage or more during this time as you work to -

Good route if you're out of options

I was apart of the Java cohort. Management has been messy since I was originally apart of the C# cohort then moved to Java. It was nice and fun at first, we would review a topic for the week then do challenges. We got paid a small stipend of 250 a week and this did NOT support being able to pay rent, I had to do a side hustle but they did not really want us to work any other job or do anything else to make money. After the 8 weeks we were moved to bench and were promised interviews, I think it was bad luck but almost none of us got an interview for the 7 months we were apart of it. Some of us got jobs but we had 1 or 2 interviews the entire time, all while getting paid nearly $11/hr bi-weekly.The jobs are also as per the contract, underpay you so I'd say be ready to accept that, I joined it on the pretense I was ready to be underpaid just to break into the industry.TLDR; it pays you little but gives you a lower barrier of entry into a software developer job, you can still get laid off.

Thanks for leaving us a review! All of our GenSparkers are aware of the pay rate before starting training, and we're happy we have the ability to provide a stipend as opposed to most other educational opportunities where students have to pay for it. We understand most of our learners have bills to pay, so it is possible to work another job as long as it doesn't intefer with being present during training hours!

Not worth your time

This company suffers from a severe lack of communication. The training is inadequate and unprofessional. The pay during training and while waiting for a contract is horrendous and impossible to live on. There is no job security. Even after signing my contract with the client, I was let go because they did not have a project to put me on. Overall, my experience, as well as my coworkers that I have spoken with, has been terrible. I wasted months of my life to get nowhere.

Hi there, we apologize you had a bad experience with us. We have since improved upon our communication process, and our trainers are identifying gaps within our training program and making appropriate adjustments. In regard to the pay, we are one of the only training programs that pays our learners instead of asking them to pay. We know it can be a bit of an adjustment, but we make sure all of our GenSparkers are aware of the terms of agreement before going into training. We thank you for leaving a review, as we are always on a mission to improve! If there's anything else you'd like to discuss you can reach us here: https://genspark.net/contact/

Go in with both eyes open

Working at GenSpark is basically like being a professional job hunter. You get paid a weekly stipend during training and then bi-weekly while on the bench. Training is minimal at best. They won't really teach you anything, all learning is done on your own. They have an instructor who can answer your questions, but there won't be any actual classes or lessons like you might expect at a boot camp or school of any kind. If you are already competent at basic coding skills, the training is really easy. If you don't know how to code, you'll most likely fail.Once training is finished, you're on the bench where you will wait for job interviews. You may or may not get any interviews and if you don't, you will not be informed why. Any attempts to find out information regarding the status of your job hunt will be met only with vague answers that they're working on it. If you do manage to land interviews, it's up to you to impress them. The interview questions tend to be fairly easy with no algorithm questions, just questions that gauge whether you know your stuff. However, answering the questions correctly in no way guarantees that you'll get the job. Some people will be hired and others won't. You'll never receive any feedback about your interview performance and you'll never find out why the clients did or didn't want you. If you are interviewed and then selected by a client, the salary is okay (even if a little low for an IT job) and it'll likely lead to a fruitful career in the future.Overall, this route is possibly the worst way to get into IT but it's also probably the -

Pro

paid training, remote, flexible work/life balance during training, easy if you have the skills

Contra

training pay is low, actual training is basically non-existent, low likelihood of actually getting placed with a client

We hear you, and appreciate you taking the time to leave a review. For training, we've found it best to let students learn at their own pace and simulate how learning will be while on-the-job, but we are analyzing new ways to improve training, so your review is very helpful. As for information regarding interviews, we tell our GenSparkers everything that is relayed to us by the client, we promise we are not purposely leaving you in the dark!

Boring and slow space

Online training is good but other than that it’s a very bad place. Not very helpful at all kinda gotta learn on your on promise multiple jobs but don't back it up .

We are so glad to hear you enjoyed our training program. We do have instructor-led training, but students are expected to continue learning on their own in order to best prepare for on-the-job learning. It is 100% our goal to place you with a client, as it is the best case scenario for everyone involved, but the market doesn't always allow that. We're sorry you weren't placed with a job initially, but you always will have the support of our GenSpark team and can reach out again to see if there are other opportunities available.

Great to Boost Your Experience

I recommend GenSpark to anyone trying to get their foot in the door of the tech industry. I am a bootcamp grad and from my experience, I struggled to land a job even though I had landed multiple interviews. The majority of them were startups since I didn't think I could land a job at a massive company with little experience. That is until after I went through GenSpark's program I landed a job from the first interview with a Fortune 500 company.

Pro

Pros: Bring interviews to you ( you don't have to go look for company recruiters ), Paid while learning, No direct payments are needed ( they benefit from their clients paying to get YOU )

Contra

Cons: Some experience is highly recommended ( might be required in some cases ), Possibly required to work on-site

Great place to get your foot in the door

You get what you put into it. If you need someone to hold your hand the entire way, this won't be for you. But if you're passionate about learning software development, and getting your foot in the door somewhere, this is one of the best opportunities to do so.

"If you are stuggling use SoloLearn in your spare time"

The training was just Leek code problems you had to figure out how to do, skip them and just study Leek code problems for a month and learn the topics. That is all they are going to tell you to do, we were suppose to work on group progects and nobody helped and then they make you do Glider Exams which track your web cam and mic to make sure you do not look anything up while doing Lekk code problems.

Thanks for your review! Our cohorts vary in curriculum, so not every program will include Leek code problems. Instructors are supposed to help students when asked, and we're sorry that this wasn't the case for you. As for the Glider exams, integrity is of the utmost importance to us, and we want to make sure students are taking the exams honestly so we can appropriately gauge their skill level.

Always learning

Your main role here is to always be learning. They hire you to essentially train for 3 months and at the end of those 3 months, they find a company for you to interview for.
